Birds of Lewisham is based on sightings of species recently spotted in the local backyards, which include the:
- Red Wattlebird,
- Superb Fairy Wren,
- New Holland Honeyeater,
- Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoo, and
- Rainbow Lorikeet.
This artwork is an invitation to look at the world in a way that takes nothing for granted and to restore our sense of wonder. Birds make any place a chance for discovery and the Inner West is buzzing with species.
Nature is not something 'out there', it is, in fact, at our doorstep.
It begins right here, where we live.
We are not alone in our cities, and that is a wonderful thing.
The artwork was commissioned by the residents of the house and was also featured in an episode of ABC TV's Catalyst about Sdney's urban birds.
