The Kurri Kurri Visitor Information Centre mural project was commissioned with the intention to attract an interactive space for visitors to enjoy and photograph. As the entrance to the Information Centre the artwork that Internationally renowned Artist Jenny McCracken has designed and produced is a highlight of the Kurri Kurri Town of Murals collection.
This artwork shows the Hebburn No. 2 Colliery pit shaft with local men exiting the pit at the end of their shift. Hebburn No. 2 dispatched its first full train of coal in 1921 and ceased production in 1972. The site continued producing electricity from the powerhouse until 1976. The Greta seam was mined at a thickness of over 6 metres and a depth of as much as 410 metres below ground. Hebburn No. 2 Colliery was located on the foothills of Mount Tomalpin.
