In 1925 local businessman George Ryder purchased two small bus operators in the Coalfields – The South Maitland Railway Company and Marble Bar Motor Service. He named the company Rover Motors Pty Ltd. Rab Lewis joined him in the business soon after and remained with the company for over 60 years. In the 1940's Rover Motors was the only private company operating double decker buses. By the 1950's buses were running to Maitland every half an hour from 4.30am until midnight with up to five double deckers jammed full of revellers from the dances held on Friday and Saturday night.
The company is now known simply as Rover. The driver of the bus shown in this mural is a likeness to Rab Lewis in acknowledgement of his contribution to the establishment and growth of this local company.
