Sewing Mural

This was the site of one of many sewing factories located throughout the area. These factories were a major employer of local women and this mural was painted to acknowledge this important part of the more recent history of the Kurri Kurri area. Up to 800 women were employed at any one time at local sewing factories.

Many different types of garments were made - everything from white bowls dresses to lingerie but it was the placket front dresses of the 70's and 80's that became known as an 'Osti' dress that would stay in the women's mind. A good seamstress was expected to produce 130 of these dresses per day. Unfortunately the industry wound down in the 90's due to the availability of cheaper imported goods.
