We've got the Spirit tells the story of Holy Spirit Parish Primary School. Underlying this story is the school's connection to the Awabakal and Wonnarua people as traditional custodians of the land on which the school and parish is built.
Originally the school was under the patronage of St Joseph and led by the Sisters of St Joseph. It still celebrates and lives its Josephite heritage.
The original church building was built in 1904, with the school opened in the church in 1908. The Sisters of St Joseph travelled each day on horse drawn bus from Cessnock to Kurri Kurri to teach the 140 enrolled students. After fire destroyed the original building in 1928 a new brick building was built and used as a church and school. In 1963 the current church was constructed and continues to be used today. 1987 saw the purchase of land opposite the church and school on which this mural stands. It was purchased as and continues to be used as a school playground.
A long term employee of the school and parent and grandparent, Trish commenced work at Holy Spirit in 1990 and continued to bless the school with her kindness, dedication and love until her retirement in 2021. The cup with the Kookaburra is an illustration of a coffee mug Trish was presented with on her retirement, reflecting her long term commitment to the Kurri Kurri community, her respect of nature and her love of a good cuppa and chat.
The school changed its name and motto from St Joseph's, knowledge, caring and sharing to Holy Spirit, peace and justice, in 1991 to align with the parish name.
Along with its Indigenous and Josephite connections, the school's community thrives on its learning, sporting, cultural and creative opportunities. Social connections with the broader community are many especially through Mini Vinnies, the many local events such as Nostalgia Festival and excursions to places like Canberra and Great Aussie Bush Camp.
