After five months of wacky sketches and designs made by Marrickville kids, this artwork made its home in a breezeway within Wicks Place. The artwork is a representation of what Marrickville means to them, with colours that are found around the precinct. The artwork was completed in five days.
With big flowers, smiley faces, colourful squiggles and all sorts of wonderfully wonky ideas, Marrickville artist Elliott Routledge shaped this mural by drawing inspiration from artwork submitted by local kids and families from around our Marrickville neighbourhood.
To create the work, Elliott dissected, traced and reinterpreted the children's gestures and ideas, weaving them through his own visual language while holding onto the spirit, imagination and joy behind them.
Painted just around the corner from Elliott's home and studio, the mural is a reflection of the pride, affection and sense of belonging shared by the people who call this neighbourhood home.
The recurring motifs of flowers, plants and abstract squiggles were particularly inspiring, and I have woven them throughout the work as a way of honouring those contributions. - Elliott Routledge
