From the spiral staircase near the green car park, this artwork was created for NAIDOC Week 2021, a story which emanates from the artist's emotions.
The work is built on a foundation of the Aboriginal flag of which I have purposely left out the confines of the box to represent the borderless land of Australia being all Indigenous land. The circle however means much more from the sun, moon to a single drop of water. The notion of no beginning and no end, love itself. The colours are from the earth to the sky and the lines are the interwoven connection. The hands of a young Indigenous girl for me tell a story of family, growth and the overwhelming belief that the future, our children will do better than us. The birds in flight match the negative white spaces like puzzle pieces.
This is simple: we don't exist, we can't exist alone. We can learn many great things from Aboriginal culture and simply put I would like people to treat their community as family and the natural environment as mother herself. That is what inspires me to paint everyday to tell a story in an unspoken language and pay homage to the beautiful land we are so lucky to walk on everyday.
