Boowambillee/Shark Island

Boowambillee/Shark Island by Claire Foxton | Street Art NSW

This mural was commissioned by Woollahra Council as part of the NSW Government’s Streets as Shared Spaces Program. Mural artist Claire Foxton found inspiration in Boowambillee, the roughly shark-shaped island surrounded by the waters of Rose Bay. Now a peaceful National Park, the island was once home to a quarantine station.

The mural features aerial views of Rose Bay; the Shark Island Light; Rani, the first Sydney to Hobart yacht race winner which launched from Boowambillee/Shark Island on Boxing Day 1945; Sixspine Leatherjacket (Meuschenia freycineti); seaplane G-AEUB ‘Camilla’, that flew the inaugural Empire Airmail flight from Australia’s first international airport at Rose Bay on 4 August 1938; Australian Pelican (Pelecanus conspicillatus); Port Jackson Shark (Heterodontus portusjacksoni); Moreton Bay Fig (Ficus macrophylla); and three local endangered species, White’s Seahorse (Hippocampus whitei), the Nielsen Park She-Oak (Allocasuarina portuensis) and Seagrass (Posidonia Australis).
