On the western side of Petersham Park adjacent to the Dudley Seddon Pavilion a water tank has been painted green. Mollie Flaherty is depicted in perpetual motion playing cricket along the top half, while many elements of the park, including native flora and fauna are depicted on the lower half.
This welcoming part of country is where Gadigal and Wangal people have lived, it was and always will be Aboriginal land. Petersham Park may once have been good kangaroo ground. Today the park has a mix of native and introduced flora and fauna, some nocturnal, which locals enjoy and we celebrate here.
Petersham Oval has been a place to gather and play games for many generations.
In 1936 fast bowler Mollie Flaherty practiced her graceful style on the ovals of the Inner West. She played for NSW and was in the first Australian women’s team to tour England in 1937. Mural painted with gratitude to this ground we share.
